Denim Shorts Recalled By The Children's Place

The Children’s Place Services Co., working in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), issued a recall of Denim Cargo Shorts because the metal snaps could detach from the garment, posing a choking hazard.

No injuries have been reported in connection with this recall, to date.

The recall involves denim shorts with item numbers 567844 or 567967, sold at The Children’s Place. Other item numbers are NOT included in this recall.

E-commerce customers will be mailed a postage-pre-paid envelope with return instructions for a refund. In the meantime, the recalled shorts should be taken away from children.

Power Adapters for Laptops Recalled By Comarco

Comarco Inc. has announced a voluntary recall of more than 500,000 laptop adapters due to faulty wiring that can cause the connector tips to melt, posing a burn hazard.

To date, 518 incidents of the connector tips heating have been reported. Eight consumers have reported a fingertip or hand burn; however medical attention was not required.

Targus Universal Wall Power Adapters for Laptops with the following SKU Numbers are affected by this recall - APA23US-02, APA23US-03, APA23US-04, APA63US-03, APA63US-04, APM62US-03 and APM62US-04.

The recalled adapters were sold at several stores nationwide including Best Buy and Walmart. They were also sold online at Amazon.com and other retailers from June 2009 through March 2010.

One Killed In Fifty-Car Wreck

A section of Interstate 80 was shutdown in southwest Wyoming yesterday following an accident that involved more than fifty vehicles.

It appears a semi jackknifed on eastbound I-80 causing the 50-vehicle pileup. A second truck, attempting to avoid the accident, overturned which set off a chair of other accidents, according to Wyoming Highway Patrol.

Six people were taken to the hospital and one person was killed. As many as 100 vehicles were wrecked or stranded on the stretch of highway, unable to move past the other accidents.

Several factors are to blame for the accidents, say investigators, including foggy conditions, icy roads and drivers who many have been driving too fast in such conditions. The investigation is ongoing.

Children's Greeting Cards With Bracelets Recalled

Schurman Fine Papers, in cooperation with Health Canada and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, recently announced a voluntary recall of greeting cards with attached bracelets.

The paint coating on the bracelets contains high levels of lead. No illnesses have been reported, however parents and caregivers are being advised to take the products away from children.

Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects.

The recall involves Papyrus brand children’s greeting cards with an attached wooden bead bracelet. The front of the card says “Happy Birthday To You” and includes an attached bracelet. The UPC number is 734524634013 and can be found in the lower right hand corner.

Consumers can call Schurman Fine Papers at (888) 990-9095 to arrange a refund and for additional information.

Vegetable Choppers Sold at Sam’s Club Recalled

Pedrini Pro Chop Professional Choppers have been recalled by Lifetime Brands because pieces of the metal blades can break off during use and fall into food being prepared by the chopper, posing a hazard to users.

The company has received three reports of the chopper’s blade breaking off, including one report of a consumer suffering cuts to the mouth from chewing food containing one of the broken blades.

The recall involves the Pedrini Prop Chopper with model number 5061050 and UPC 024131114849. The choppers were sold at Sam’s Club locations nationwide.

Consumers should stop using the recalled items and return them to any Sam’s Club location for a free refund.

Evenflo Co., in cooperation with Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada have announced a voluntary recall of Evenflo ExerSaucer® 1-2-3 Tea for Me™ Activity Learning Centers because the candle flame attached to the cake toy can detach, posing a choking hazard.

To this date the company has received 11 reports of the toy flames detaching – five occurred in the U.S. and six in Canada. There have been no reports of injury.

This recall involves Evenflo ExerSaucer® 1-2-3 Tea for Me™ activity learning centers. Models included in the recall are 6161834 and 6161920.

The recalled play sets were sold at Toys “R” Us stores nationwide as well as other popular kids product stores.

Consumers should remove the toy flame from the cake toy on the activity set and contact the company for a free replacement toy.

Groups Push Congress To Reform Toxic Substance Act

Hundreds of babies are crawling to D.C. to urge Congress to overhaul America’s toxic chemical policy.

Each year, some 1.2 million children under six are unintentionally poisoned at home by everyday items including cleaning products.

The federal law intended to protect people from health-harming chemicals is not working and needs to be overhauled, says event sponsors, which include Seventh Generation. They also say, only 200 of some 800 chemicals require safety testing.

SurgeMaster Surge Protectors Recalled By Belkin

Belkin International, in cooperation with the CPSC, announced a voluntary recall of SurgeMaster Surge Protectors, because the molding on the rotating plug can crack or detach, posing a shock hazard.

To this date, the company has received seven consumer reports of the molding cracking. No injuries were reported.

The recalled SurgeMaster surge protectors were sold from January to December 2003. The following models are affected by the recall: F9G930-10, F9G930v10, F9G930-10-W and F9G930-10-SN.

Belkin shold be contacted for a new replacement, but in the meantime, consumers should stop using the recalled power strips.

Cheyenne To Pass Cell Phone Ban

The Cheyenne City Council recently voted 7-1 to pass a ban on using cell phones while driving, with the exception of hands-free devices. But, until October 15, police will only enforce it if a cell phone is a contributing factor in a crash.

Officers are not going to stop vehicles with out-of-state plates, as its cell phone wielding driver would presumably be using the device to find his way around, said Councilman Don Pierson, the city’s former police chief.

On the other hand, local residents will be stopped, ticketed and fined," Pierson said.

According to Rick Kaysen, crews will be putting up signs at the city’s major entrances warning visitors of the ban.

An estimated 20 percent of drivers are text while behind the wheel, according to a Nationwide Insurance study last year. Among young people, between the ages of 18 to 24, that number skyrockets to 66 percent.

Hydroxycut Products Recalled Due To Risk Of Liver Injury

Some Hydroxycut products have been associated with serious liver injuries and as such consumers should immediately stop taking these products.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received 23 reports of liver injury, including jaundice and elevated liver enzymes. Other adverse reports include seizures, heart problems and rhabdomyolysis, another type of muscle damage.

Hydroxycut products are dietary supplements marketed for weight loss, fat burners, energy-enhancers and water loss under the Iovate and MuscleTech brands.

Although rare, liver injury was reported by patients at doses of Hydroxycut recommended on the bottle. Symptoms of liver injury include jaundice and brown urine. Other symptoms can include abdominal pain, vomiting, loss of appetitie, excessive fatigue, weakness, nausea and itching.

“The FDA urges consumers to discontinue use of Hydroxycut products in order to avoid any undue risk. Adverse events are rare, but exist. Consumers should consult a physician or other health care professional if they are experiencing symptoms possibly associated with these products,” said Linda Katz, M.D., interim chief medical officer of the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition.

Liver-related disorders have not been reported in all Hydroxycut products, but the company has agreed to recall all of the products listed above.
